Toll rules for motorhomes in Hungary from 1 January 2026

15-01-2026

From 1 January 2026, important changes will apply to the toll regulations for motorhomes and recreational vehicles using toll roads in Hungary.

Following the amendment of Act LXVII of 2013 on distance based tolls for the use of motorways, expressways and main roads, recreational vehicles will be subject exclusively to the user charge system based on electronic vignettes.

As a result, all recreational vehicles, including those with a maximum authorised mass exceeding 3.5 tonnes, will be required to purchase an electronic vignette in order to use toll roads in Hungary.

From the same date, recreational vehicles with a maximum authorised mass over 3.5 tonnes will no longer be able to pay road tolls through the HU GO distance based toll system. Toll payment will no longer be possible using an on board unit or by purchasing a route ticket, regardless of registration status. For legal use of the toll road network, an electronic vignette will be mandatory for all recreational vehicles.

The correct vignette category must be determined solely on the basis of the official vehicle registration certificate or other legally issued vehicle documentation.

When selecting the appropriate category, the data contained in field J indicating the vehicle category, field F.1 indicating the maximum authorised mass, and field S.1 indicating the number of seats including the driver must be taken into account. The information shown in the registration documents is decisive for correct classification and for avoiding penalties.

Recreational vehicles belong to vignette category D1 if their maximum authorised mass does not exceed 3.5 tonnes, the vehicle category is marked as M1, and the seating capacity does not exceed seven persons including the driver.

Recreational vehicles belong to vignette category D2 if the seating capacity exceeds seven persons regardless of vehicle weight, or if the vehicle category is marked as M1 and the maximum authorised mass exceeds 3.5 tonnes regardless of seating capacity.

In these cases, a D2 electronic vignette is required.

Before travelling, it is recommended to carefully verify the vehicle registration details and purchase the correct electronic vignette in advance in order to ensure legal road use and avoid fines or surcharge notices.
